Fission fragments of 1 GeV/nucleon 238U nuclei interacting with a deuterium target have been investigated with the Fragment Separator at GSI (Darmstadt) by measuring the isotopic production cross sections and fragment velocities. The combination of these two observables enabled to disentangle the high- and low-energy fission modes. Specific properties of these two modes were analyzed; in particular, the charge distribution of the fissioning projectile-like prefragments could be determined for the first time.
