The phonon damping model is extended to describe the damping of charge-exchange resonances. The formalism is applied to calculate the strength distribution of the Gamow-Teller resonance in 90Nb. The results obtained are found to be in reasonable agreement with recent experimental data and with those of a previous study with explicit microscopic coupling to 2p2h configurations using a realistic interaction.
